GB&I Names Talented Ten for Walker Cup Assault on Cypress Point

A blend of youthful prodigies and seasoned campaigners, led by Captain Dean Robertson, aims to defy the odds and reclaim the famous trophy on one of golf’s most majestic stages.

The members of GB&I winning St Andrews Trophy team have all been selected for the Walker Cup

The stage is set for a clash of amateur golf’s finest. Against the backdrop of the majestic Cypress Point Club on California’s Monterey Peninsula, the teams representing Great Britain & Ireland and the United States for the 50th playing of the Walker Cup have been formally announced. The biennial match, steeped in over a century of tradition and rivalry, will unfold on September 6-7, presenting GB&I with a monumental challenge and a golden opportunity to win the famous trophy for the first time since a triumphant 2015 campaign at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

At the helm of the GB&I charge is Scotsman Dean Robertson, a former European Tour winner whose leadership credentials were emphatically burnished just last month. Captain Robertson guided his side to a commanding 16½-8½ victory over the Continent of Europe in the St Andrews Trophy in Spain, a result that has injected a potent dose of belief and momentum into the camp. For Robertson, the selection process has been a meticulous labour of observation and analysis, focused not just on raw skill but on the character required to conquer one of the world’s most intimidating and strategic golf courses.

“This talented team represents the very best in skill, unity, resilience and determination,” stated Robertson, his confidence palpable. “Each player is thoroughly deserving of the opportunity to compete in the Walker Cup for Great Britain and Ireland. I’ve been watching the players over a long period to understand their personalities and attributes to meet the unique demands presented by Cypress Point.”

Acknowledging the historical weight of the task, Robertson cast his team in the role of determined underdogs—a position they are embracing wholeheartedly. “We are underdogs, but I’m confident we are equipped to compete at the highest level and will give it our best shot. We are travelling to Cypress Point to embrace the challenge, honour the legacy of the Walker Cup and aim to make history by reclaiming this famous trophy.”

Meet the GB&I Team: A Mix of Youth and Experience

The ten-man squad is composed of the top five players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) supplemented by five captain’s selections. Notably, it includes all nine players who delivered the resounding St Andrews Trophy victory, a decision that rewards form and proven team cohesion.

The team boasts a compelling blend of emerging stars and a singular, inspiring veteran narrative. Leading the charge in the rankings is Tyler Weaver (20, England), the side’s highest-ranked player at 11th in the WAGR. He is joined by Luke Poulter (21, England), whose famous surname—son of European Ryder Cup legend Ian Poulter—brings its own aura of match-play pedigree and fighting spirit.

Scottish talent is well-represented by a formidable duo. Cameron Adam (22) of Royal Burgess and Connor Graham (18) of Blairgowrie both arrive with valuable experience from having qualified for The Open at Royal Portrush. Graham holds the distinction of being the sole returning player from the 2023 GB&I team that fell 14½-11½ to the USA on the Old Course at St. Andrews, making him a crucial source of insight. They are joined by compatriot Niall Shiels Donegan (20), who arrives in scintillating form fresh off a deep run to the semi-finals of the prestigious U.S. Amateur.

Perhaps the most remarkable story on the team is that of Irishman Stuart Grehan (32). The former professional, who returned to the amateur ranks in 2025, will make his Walker Cup debut at County Louth. His wealth of experience and maturity provides a invaluable counterbalance to the squad's youthful exuberance, with the rest of the team averaging just 21 years of age. Completing the line-up are the consistent British talents Eliot Baker (22, England), Dominic Clemons (23, England), Charlie Forster (22, England), and Gavin Tiernan (19, Ireland).

The Formidable Foe: A Look at the USA Team

The challenge awaiting them is immense. The United States team, captained by Nathan Smith, is a powerhouse on paper, boasting the top three players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Their squad is laden with collegiate standouts and proven winners, including Jackson Koivun (20), Ben James (22), and Michael La Sasso (21).

Adding a significant layer of experience is Stewart Hagestad (34), a two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion and a veteran of multiple Walker Cup and Eisenhower Trophy campaigns. His knowledge of elite team competition and calm demeanor will be a cornerstone for the American side. The team is rounded out by the formidable talents of Ethan Fang (20), Preston Stout (21), Mason Howell (18), Jacob Modleski (20), Tommy Morrison (21), and Jase Summy (21).

The historical statistics underscore the scale of the task facing GB&I. The United States leads the overall series by a commanding margin of 39-9-1. Furthermore, Cypress Point itself is a fortress for the Americans, having hosted the Walker Cup once before in 1981, which resulted in a decisive 15-9 victory for the home side.

The Ultimate Challenge: Cypress Point Itself

Beyond the rival team, the true opponent for both sides may be the course itself. Cypress Point is widely regarded as one of Alister MacKenzie’s most brilliant architectural masterpieces. Its breathtaking routing through dunes, forests, and along dramatic, rocky Pacific coastline is a test of strategy, nerve, and creative shot-making. The famous par-3 16th, requiring a heroic carry over the ocean, is perhaps the most iconic hole in all of golf and will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the match’s outcome.

This setting creates a perfect narrative for the 50th edition: the top-ranked American favourites on home soil versus a unified and confident GB&I team, armed with a shrewd captain and nothing to lose. They are united by a shared goal: to silence the odds, conquer a legend, and return the Walker Cup across the Atlantic.
