Short Game Lessons

The short game is often cited as accounting for a significant portion of a golfer's overall game. While the exact percentage can vary based on the definition of "short game" and the skill level of the golfer, a common estimation is that around 60-70% of a golfer's strokes come from within 100 yards of the hole. This includes putting, chipping, pitching, and bunker play.

Breakdown of Golf Strokes

  1. Putting:

  • Typically accounts for around 40-50% of total strokes in a round. The number of putts can vary greatly depending on the golfer's skill level and the course difficulty.

  1. Chipping and Pitching:

  • Shots around the green (chips and pitches) can account for approximately 10-20% of total strokes, depending on how often a player misses greens in regulation and their short game skills.

  1. Bunker Play:

  • Shots from greenside bunkers are a smaller portion but are still considered part of the short game. The frequency depends on course design and player accuracy.

For professional golfers, the importance of the short game can be even more pronounced, as they often face more challenging course conditions and need to save strokes in competitive play. For amateur players, improving the short game can lead to significant reductions in scores because it offers opportunities to recover from missed shots.

While long drives and accurate approach shots are crucial, the short game is where golfers can often make the most significant gains in their scoring. Improving this part of your game can dramatically lower your handicap and improve overall performance.

Taking short game sessions with a coach offers numerous benefits for golfers looking to improve their skills and lower their scores. The short game, encompassing putting, chipping, pitching, and bunker play, is crucial for scoring efficiency and overall performance.
